Last of the Mohicans

May 7, 2012

Last of the Mohicans, 9 x 12, oil on panel

Every once in a while I fall into the bad habit of starting paintings. Lots of them. Currently, I have about 10 paintings in progress. The good news is that I will have 10 new paintings to share within the next few weeks. The ‘bad’ news is that I haven’t posted any new work for a while .

So, I thought we could revisit a (not so old) friend, The Last of the Mohicans. As we all know I love old books, toys and other fun things. The vintage American Indian ceramic figurines are part of my collection and make me smile every time I look at them. And these books have an average age of 100 years. Yes, Last of the Mohicans is one of them.

Happy Valentines Day!

Cordial Cherry, 9 x 12, oil on board, framed

Happy Valentines Day!

Who doesn’t like to get chocolates for valentines day? And this one has no calories and will last forever.

A sweet red cherry and sticky cordial cream covered by smooth milk chocolate. I don’t know if I wanted to simply capture the beauty of the cordial cherry or if I was just looking for an excuse to buy myself a box of chocolates! Yum!

It was Neither More Nor Less Than a Pig, 18 x 24, oil on cradled board

This is the finished painting. The title comes from a line in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

The porcelain was a bigger challenge than I thought it would be.

I hope you enjoyed the Work in Progress. Feel free to leave a comment or ask a question

Porcelain Porcine – Day 3

Porcelain Pigs, work in progress

I skipped showing the image for day 2 because I think only I could tell that any progress was made. Day 2 was spent adding shape and form, darks and lights to the porcelain.

Here, at the end of Day 3, you can see that everything has started to solidify. The shapes are taking on more character.

More tomorrow

Porcelain Porcine – Work in progress

January 18, 2012

Porcelain Pigs, work in progress
I had a Need to create a painting with bone china or porcelain. My first thought was ‘Teacups’. But as I browsed through my Cabinet of Curiosities I came across this sounder of pigs.

I draw the still life on a piece of tracing paper first then transfer the drawing onto the canvas or board.

Sometimes I do detailed monochromatic or Grisaille underpaintings and then build up the colors. This is a fairly monochromatic painting so I’m starting by blocking in the colors and the lights and darks.

This is how the painting looks at the end of Day 1. More tomorrow

Flight of Fancy

Flight of Fancy, 12 x 12, oil on canvas

This Trompe L’Oeil features a page from a coloring book showing Mickey Mouse in his airplane. The page is artfully colored with the crayons shown in the tin box. The owl on the vintage chalk board completes the Flight theme.

The Faces We Wear by K Henderson

The Faces We Wear, 24 x 18, oil on cradled board

I got a vintage Pinocchio paper doll earlier this year and fell in love with the Long Nose Mask. I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to build a painting around it. Then when I found an Edwardian Era paper mask, the trompe l’oeil still life came together.

Also included in the still life is a Joker with a mask, a wooden Block (M is for mask), and a cover from Black Mask pulp magazine. The magazine also has a bottle of poison on it (covered by the ribbon)so I added a bottle to the mix. The ribbon? I just liked it and wanted to paint it.
